Seijo Ep.7 Final

The final episode shows Motoko as a woman who tried the best she could to overcome her difficult living situations.  She struggled hard throughout her life not to be used by men and improve herself to be "Seijo", a sacred woman.  Perhaps, sacredness and evilness aren't the total opposites.  It all depends how people see and judge a certain phenomenon.

(spoiler)

After being told by Haruki that he's not going to see her again, and pushed into a taxi, Motoko goes home.  The first thing she does at home is to slash Saint Praxedis (a painting by Vermeer) saying, "Why can you smile like that?  It must be hard doing that."  Motoko looks back at her life.

When she gave up her idea of going to college, she felt her life was going to be miserable like her mother who was always used by men.  However, she tried hard to improve herself and studied hard.  She sneaked into colleges, pretending to be a student there.

She also worked hard in a super market to earn money.  One day, her boss at work, made a sudden move and held her, asking her to have sex with him.  That experience made her think that if there is love between the two, it's okay to receive money from the man.

Then she met Agawa, a rich IT guy.  She became his lover and smiled for him.

Izumi, Haruki's fiancee, goes out to try on wedding dresses.  When she was trying on a dress, Motoko comes in.  She tells Izumi how deeply she and Haruki loved each other.  Saying there's no way Haruki loves Motoko now, Izumi slaps her.  Motoko slaps Izumi back and asks her to give Haruki back to her.  Haruki comes into the room and asks Motoko not to bother Izumi again.

Motoko talks to a photographer who was taking pictures of Motoko and Haruki.  She tells him her past relationship with Haruki, which becomes big gossip news.

Chikura's wife tells the prosecution that she'll give a statement in the coming trial to prove Motoko killed her husband.  She wants Motoko to receive a death penalty, however she is told that Motoko is not likely to get that, perhaps she'll spend a few years in prison.  Hearing that, Chikura's wife gets very dissapointed.

Because of the gossip, Haruki and Izumi postpones their wedding.  However, they decide to register their marriage.  In front of the municipal office where they are to register their marriage, Motoko was waiting for them.  Haruki tells her not to come closer to Izumi and him.  Motoko tells him that he should have told her about his marriage to Izumi and that she loves him deeply.  She holds onto him, and then tries to strangle him.  At that very moment, Motoko falls down on the ground.  She is stabbed by Chikura's wife.

"My husband died in great pain.  I'll never forgive you."   Saying that many times, Chikura's wife grabs Motoko's head and bangs the head onto the ground.

Later it is found that Chikura's wife pushed Chikura from the top of a building down to the ground.  She did it because Chikura asked her to do it.

Motoko becomes blind after being stabbed and getting her head injured.

One day, Haruki's boss goes to see Motoko in the hospital.  He listens to her talk "not as her lawyer, but as her friend."  She says she should have been judged properly.

She starts speaking....  She met many men in her life, and smiled for them.  They worshiped her and then, ruined themselves with their thoughts.  Chikura told her he's going to divorce his wife, but Motoko never asked him for that.  She just wanted to be with him even if they were poor.

She regrets leaving Haruki when he was in high school.  He was different from other men.  She felt she was able to show her real self in front of him.

She wonders why there is such a thing as love.  "If love doesn't exist in the world, I could have led a better life."

She goes on speaking and calls Izumi, a good woman.  Izumi is the kind of woman who can be happy.  Such women are rare.  Motoko wishes Haruki and Izumi to be happy together.  Knowing that a part of herself wishes somebody's happiness makes her relieved.

Motoko's speech to Haruki's boss is heard by Izumi on the background.

Knowing that his own brother, Katsuki leaked the information on Haruki's relationship with Motoko to the press, Haruki beats Katsuki.   Haruki shouts that Motoko was struggling hard to live and improve her life, even though she committed a crime.  Katsuki is in no place to criticize her as he only thinks about hurting and trifling other people.  "Nobody is qualified to criticize her," says Haruki.

Haruki goes to see Motoko.  She's not in her house.  Haruki finds her at the beach.  She walks further into the ocean.  He tells her to stop.  Motoko says;

"Haruki-kun.  You finally came."
"Loving you...  that was my only mistake.  That may have been the real me."

He stops her again, saying, "Don't go.  Don't die."

"Then will you die with me?"

She walks further and further into the sea.  Izumi appears and Haruki stops following Motoko.  While Haruki and Izumi are watching, Motoko dissapears into the sea.

Haruki's narration:  She was seeking love... harder than anybody else.

Two months after  Motoko's death, the appeal for the 2nd trial is dismissed.  Motoko's innocent is firmly established.

A year later, Izumi's last name is Nakamura, the same as Haruki's.

Haruki stands at the beach, and puts down a bouquet on the sand.  Ocean waves washes away the bouquet, pushing out further into the sea.
