New Summer J-drama (7): Henshin (Transformation)

Now that Double Face is over, this new drama based on a Higashino Keigo's medical suspence novel just started on a Japanese cable channel WOWOW.  It is made up of 5 episodes, starring Kamiki Ryunosuke, Nakaido Fumi, Watabe Gouta, etc.

(Spoiler)
On Christmas eve, Naruse Jun'ichi (played by Kamiki R.) stops by at a jewelry store in Ginza to pick up a ring for his girlfriend, Megu (Nakaido F.).  There he gets involved in a robbery, and was shot in the head by the robber played by Watabe Gouta.

Jun'ichi goes through an operation, and comes back to life.  For several months he was confined in a hospital room so that the doctors can watch him closely.  After going through rehabilitation training, he is finally allowed to go back home.

What actually happened was that soon after the robbery, the robber killed himself and died, and that his brain was transplanted to Jun'ichi.

Brain transplant surgery is illegal in Japan, but with a backing by a pharmaceutical company, the doctor in charge of Jun'ichi's case was going to make this public as it is the first case in the world.   Then the company changes mind as they were afraid of bashing by the public and by those in the medical/pharmaceutical world.

The doctor lies to Jun'ichi and to the media that he used a new medication that works to reproduce brain cells.  The truth is only known to the doctors who worked on Jun'ichi and to Megumi, his girlfriend.

Jun'ichi slowly feels uncomfortable being himself, and finds Megumi not so attractive.  Megumi finds that his drawing/sketches he made after the incident are not the same as those made before.

While all these things are taking placing, a detective (played by Murakami Jun) starts to investigate the robbery case.  He feels something is off the track, although he can't tell what it is.

I'm not a big fan of Kamiki, although I saw him on many dramas.  But I'm looking forward to seeing how the story develops.
