Bakumatsu Gurume Bushimeshi Ep.1

A new J-drama season (Spring 2017) has started!  Among the ones I watched so far, Bakumatsu Gurume Bushimeshi (AsianWiki) is my most favorite.  It's fun!  I must admit that I love dramas dealing with food/cooking.

This drama is about a low-rank samurai Banshirou (played by Seto Kouji) who came to Edo as a part of his Daimyou (feudal lord) troupe because of Sankin Koutai (a system under which feudal lords in the Edo period were required to spend every other year in residence in Edo.)

(Spoiler)

As they must leave their families at home, Banshirou misses his wife and daughter.  One day he happens to meet a guy in a Soba (noodle) shop, and tells the guy how he misses his family and how pitiful his lord is because he eats only lukewarm food.  Everything the lords eat must be checked for poison before it's served.  When the checking is done, the food is no longer hot.  Banshirou makes fun of the lord and draws his portrait/caricature.  He thinks the lord is skinny to the bones because he does not eat delicious food.  He shows the portrait to the guy.

One day Banshirou finds among his belongings, a recipe book written by his wife.  She wanted him to eat right.

Banshirou decides to follow his wife's recipe and cook for his lord who just had bad indigestion (a big lie).  While cooking he feels his wife is standing next to him teaching him how to cook.

He makes sweet potato Chagayu (茶粥 tea-flavored rice porridge)  which tastes just like his wife's.

The lord insists poison check is useless as his food caused him indigestion.  He makes them stop checking and eats hot tea porridge.  And he loves it!

Banshirou shares the remaining porridge with his colleagues who also love the porridge.

The lord decides to meet the person who cooked such delicious tea porridge.  Banshirou is called to the lord and finds out that the guy he met in a Soba shop was actually his lord in disguise.
(End of Ep.1)

Tuesday used to be my favorite day for Jdramas last season because of Nigeru Wa Haji Daga Yakunitatsu (Nige Haji).  I loved the dramas.  Probably it was my most favorite drama of 2016.  This season Tuesday is going to be my favorite drama day because of Bushi Meshi.  Fun, Fun, Fun.
