The Wind Rises: Jmovie (Anime) by Studio Ghibli

Studio Ghibli announced in August last year that it is restructuring its Film Production Division so that they are not going to produce films for some time.  Miyazaki Hayao is said to be retiring and if it is the case, this Anime, "The Wind Rises" released in 2013 is his last movie.

This movie is about Horikoshi Jiro (1903-1982) who is the designer/engineer of Zero-sen (The Mitsubishi A6M Zero, a long-range fighter aircraft used by the imperial Japanese navy in the WW2).  As a kid, he dreamed of flying.  Since his eyesight was not so good, he decided to create an airplane.

(Spoiler)
He meets a girl on the day of the Great Kanto Earthquake.  He starts working for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to create an airplane.  He meets the girl again and fall in love.  She has TB, a life-threatening illness in those days.  They get married.  Then, she leaves him for good.

It was the era, everything everyone does was related to the war.  He designs fighter jets.  Zero-sen was used in Kamikaze Tokkou (suicide) mission.

After the war, he looks back his past, and says "Not a single one (of Zero-sen) returned."  His mentor tells him that he made beautiful airplanes, but "Airplanes are beautiful, cursed dreams waiting for the sky to swallow them up." His wife appears and tells him to live.  He nods.

I was expecting a heart warming Anime, but I was totally wrong.  It was such a sad, sad movie.   (-﹏-。)

The movie ends with the song, "Hikouki Gumo (Airplane Cloud / Vapor Trail)".  It's an old hit song released in 1973, written and sung by Arai Yumi.
